On July 30 The Coalition finally showed the multiplayer half of Gears of War: E-Day — a Metallica-scored trailer plus a developer deep dive that leaves very little to guess. Two pillars: Horde Siege for PvE and Versus for PvP. Beta early access opens August 6.
Horde Siege: three squads, one city, no safe corner
Horde has been rebuilt at 12 players. Three squads of four deploy onto the same, much larger map inside the city of Kalona, each with its own mission, crossing paths with the other squads, reacting to emergent events and finishing with a final fight and an extraction.
The maps span multiple city blocks, so a squad can move, reposition and choose where to invest. Fortifications and equipment left behind by a squad that already extracted stay on the battlefield for whoever finds them — the map is a rolling battle, not a single arena. The beta ships the Golden Quarter map, set in the ruins of Kalona’s historic district; three Horde Siege maps are planned at launch, more after.
Classes
Four at launch, more in seasonal updates. Each has its own starting loadout, combat bonus, progression track and Tactical Gear on a cooldown. Classes are cosmetically independent — run any skin with any class.
- Assault — midrange and flexible; deploys a Sonic Disruptor to stun incoming waves, and gets a damage boost while in cover.
- Breacher — close-range frontline pusher; the Adrenaline Injector restores health and cuts damage taken, plus better resistance to melee and status effects.
- Marksman — precision damage over Horde Siege’s long sightlines; the Pulse Drone tags Locust units for the whole squad, with bonus critical damage.
- Medic — midrange revive specialist; the Stim Vaporizer heals and revives any Gear in range, including downed soldiers from other squads, with faster health regen.
Four Breachers in one squad is a legitimate life choice. The Coalition says there is no correct composition.
Missions, difficulty and the economy

Three playlists by length: Blitz (15–20 min, 1–2 objectives), Siege (20–40 min, multiple objectives across the map) and Horde (50–60 min, dig in and survive 10 waves in one spot). Difficulty scales with class level: Infantry, Commander, Allfather.
Most missions revolve around R.I.G.s — COG scanning rigs repurposed from Imulsion prospecting to map the Locust tunnels under Kalona. Five objective types at launch: Secure, Calibrate, Repair, Defend and Horde.
- Energy is collected as a shared squad pool but spent individually at Supply Caches, on equipment, Squad Perks, weapons and turret upgrades. Turrets can be detached, which is the fastest way to get a Heavy in your hands.
- Secondary objectives hand out Weapon Parts, free equipment and Squad Perks — but you only keep Weapon Parts if at least one squadmate extracts.
- Modifiers, Poisons and Invasion Events reshape each run. Poisons buff the Locust after every boss wave and are squad-specific; Invasion Events drop a Corpser or a Brumak on the whole map, apply a global modifier — blocked extractions, disabled caches — and reward every squad that joins the fight.
- COG Resupplies (Supply Drops, Perk Caches, Weapon Part Stockpiles) are free loot that attracts Locust attention.
- Die and you drop your COG tags: a squadmate — or a player from another squad — can carry them to a Supply Cache to revive you. Lose the whole squad and you burn a Squad Life.
Each class has 30 levels, unlocking loadout gear, Armor Mods, Tactical Gear Mods and Weapon Mods — the first time a mainline Gears lets you modify the iconic guns. Weapon customisation is shared across every class.
Versus: classic recipe, new ingredients

All Versus modes are 4v4 with equal starting loadouts, no weapon mods, and map-placed Power Weapons as the only edge. Four core modes at launch, plus rotating featured playlists:
- Team Deathmatch — back with a dynamic respawn system that moves spawns to follow the fight, still built around burning down enemy lives.
- Conquest — a King of the Hill variant where zones stay active until a team banks enough time in them rather than rotating on a timer.
- Demolition — one neutral bomb, two enemy sites, no respawns once it is planted; three detonations win the match.
- Crucible — brand new. Carry the Power Core into a shrinking, moving zone to score, and use its electrical charge to strip the flesh off anyone who comes to take it.
Six new maps at launch, all set in and around Kalona, built on classic symmetrical Gears design and tuned around the new movement: Outpost, Battleship, Park, Precinct, Market and Skyward.
laylists split into Ranked — per-mode skill rating, placement matches, Skill Division separate from Rank Rating, quit penalties — and Social, with Quickplay, bot playlists, limited-time modes and end-of-match voting to keep lobbies together. Newcomers and returning veterans get Boot Camp and a four-player co-op Combat Training space to relearn the controls.
