Every mainline Gears release since 2008 has come with one: a Lancer you can actually hold. Gears of War: E-Day is keeping the tradition, and the official Prototype Lancer Replica goes up for pre-order on the Xbox Game Studios Shop today, Thursday August 20.
What we know
Not as much as anyone would like, which is worth saying plainly rather than dressing up.
- It is a 1:1 scale replica of the Prototype Lancer, the E-Day-era version of the rifle, the same weapon Marcus is holding on the Collector’s Edition statue, with the chainsaw bayonet mounted at the front.
- It is sold through the Xbox Game Studios Shop, the same storefront that handled the Collector’s Edition, with a notification sign-up that has been live for a couple of days.
- It is a display piece. It does not fire, and the chainsaw does not spin. Anyone hoping for the motorised gimmick of some third-party replicas should reset expectations now.
- No price, no materials, no dimensions, no production numbers have been published ahead of the listing. Estimates circulating online put it somewhere in the $200–$300 bracket, but that is inference from previous releases, not a figure anyone has confirmed.
The tease itself was pure Gears: the official account said fans would be able to get one soon, after several replicas turned up as props in a WWE SummerSlam promo — an unusually loud way to trail a collectible.
Why the Prototype Lancer specifically
This is the detail that gives the replica its reason to exist. E-Day is set fourteen years before the original game, so the weapon on your wall is not the Lancer everyone already owns, it is the ancestor.
In-game, the Prototype Lancer is described as having a higher rate of fire and a deeper magazine than recent versions, positioned as the all-rounder of E-Day’s sandbox. Its chainsaw executions are also one of the beta’s reward challenges. Owning the version of the gun from the day everything went wrong is a sharper pitch than yet another Mark 2.
The tradition, and the resale reality
Lancer replicas go back to the life-size version bundled with a Gears of War 2 retail edition in 2008, 36 inches, 13 pounds, with chainsaw sound and rumble on the trigger, followed over the years by TriForce composite replicas and various PDP scale models. Older ones move on eBay in roughly the $200–$500 range depending on condition and edition.
That history is why the flip-watchers are circling this one, and it is worth being level about it. Yes, the Collector’s Edition is currently out of stock and the limited edition controller is selling briskly. But E-Day is an Xbox console exclusive, which caps the buyer pool in a way the Halo Collector’s Edition, which is also coming to PS5, was never capped. Treat any confident resale forecast you read today as speculation, including the optimistic ones.
Advice before you click
- Wait for the listing before deciding. Price, material and size will move this from “obviously yes” to “obviously no” for most people, and none of the three are known as we publish.
- Check the shipping restrictions. The Collector’s Edition only ships to the US, Canada, Mexico, Argentina and Chile, with a separate European store for EU, UK, Swiss and Norwegian buyers. Expect the same split here.
- The shop charges at checkout, not at dispatch, UK buyers found that out the hard way with the CE. Budget accordingly if delivery is months away.
- If it sells out in minutes, sit on your hands. Restocks on this storefront have happened, and the secondary market on a launch-window collectible is where enthusiasm goes to get expensive.
